Our hearts are heavy as we reflect on the devastating explosion and fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta last Saturday. The tragic loss of the four young Canadian Armed Forces Members and the many injuries sustained on the base are a painful, sobering reminder of the profound sacrifices made by those in uniform. CFB Wainwright holds a foundational place in our military community, serving as a vital training ground where nearly everyone who has worn the Canadian uniform has spent time there, away from home, in service to our country. I join all of you in extending our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones and colleagues, navigating this unimaginable grief.
This tragedy also illuminates the extraordinary courage of our Town of Pelham’s First Responders who rush toward danger under, often, extreme conditions. It reinforces this deep gratitude we hold for the Emergency Personnel in our own backyard. Here in our Town of Pelham, our local Police Officers, Paramedics and EMS workers, and our Firefighters—mostly dedicated individuals who bravely volunteer their time, skills and service— always stand ready every day to face the unknown, ensuring our homes, families and streets remain secure.
We stand together in solidarity with the military community in Wainwright, and I offer my sincere thanks and deep gratitude to the dedicated professionals and volunteers in our Town of Pelham, who quietly watch over us each and every day.
As I campaign for Councillor to represent Ward 2, this moment gives me pause. With our municipal election next week, let us reflect on the profound privilege we have to participate in democracy.
Our right to shape Pelham’s future exists because of the heavy sacrifices made by our Armed Forces, Service Members, and brave Forebears—including Indigenous Ancestors and Veterans—who fought to protect Canada’s freedoms.
When you cast your ballot, please do so with deep gratitude for those who protect us at home and abroad.
